My students are amazing. How could I not be proud of them. They all began with my Beginning Art class, based on Betty Edwards' book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. This book is the drawing bible in learning how to "see" like an artist. It makes it possible for pretty much anyone who wants to apply themselves to learn how to draw - which is the skill necessary before moving on to the next level - painting. This is not an easy process as most non-artists believe. There is no waving of a magic wand. It is hard work learning how to not only see the subject matter but to also learn to create the correct color and lighting effect. There is a lot of struggle and experimenting done before the final result is satisfactory to the student and to me.

Most students start with my Beginning Art class at Assabet After Dark in Marlborough, MA but those who can't make the Monday night class take Beginning Art at one of the many classes I offer at my studio in Worcester, MA. After completing this 10 week course, students come to understand - Talent is Not Required!
It takes a really good sense of humor, hard work and dedication but art is something anyone can learn. My Beginning Art graduates are all proof of that. Once students have completed Beginning Art they can move onto painting where they learn about values, color, brushwork technique while they add what they have learned about drawing to the painting process. Because they have mastered the fundamentals of drawing, it is now possible to apply those fundamentals using the addition of color. Painting is drawing with a brush. That is why it is so important to have good basic drawing skills.
Once students begin painting they are able to include their class paintings in this gallery. The array of subject matter is rather stunning. Everyone paints at a different pace. Some complete paintings in a few weeks, others like to take their time and study their subject matter. Some students have been with me a while and some are newbies.
My classes are full of laughter, frustration, celebration, stories of everyday life and a lot of sharing. I sometimes think I learn more from them then they from me. Everyone brings something unique and wonderful to class. Eventually they all come to know each other through their work they see online.
It is a joy to discover painting with them, helping them learn to see as an artist sees. I know you will be very impressed with all their work.
