Art supplies can be very daunting for the Beginning Art Student. Here are some of the supplies we use in my classes starting with Beginning Art. A.C.Moore and Michael's have lots of the basic supplies. And they offer discounts with their store coupons.
These are the online places where we order many of our painting supplies: |
Beginning Art
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards
This is the art bible for anyone wanting to learn how to draw. This is where we start. Drawing first. Painting is simply drawing with a brush. This book helps the new artist to learn how to "see" like an artist does. Everything needed for getting a good foundation in drawing is in this book.
11 x 14 Sketch Pad
100 pages. All purpose Sketch by Strathmore. This book will get filled up in the course of 10 weeks.
#3 and #4 B pencils
B means soft. These pencils do not have erasers on the ends.
Kneaded Eraser
Comes in a square. It needs to be "kneaded" into a ball. At that point it can be pinched into shapes to erase in small places.
General Supplies
Hand mirror, scotch tape, ruler, scissors, Crayola Washable markers, fine point permanent marker

Oil Painting
Canvas
16 x 20 stretched canvas. It's not too big, not too small. Other sizes can be used later on.
Palette
Mijello TruColor Gray Palette
Gray or neutral toned covered palette. Oil paints can be stored in the freezer. White palettes are not good for oil and acrylic painting because we do not work on a white background. Eventually the entire canvas is covered by color which is not white. When colors are mixed on a white palette they will not "read" correctly when applied to the canvas.
Gamsol Odorless Paint Thinner
An odorless mineral spirits used instead of turpentine to thin the paint
Linseed Oil
Used along with the Gamsol, fortifies the paint.
Container for Medium
Newton Brush Washer
Can or a sealed, handled pot with a strainer inside
Brushes
Synthetic or camel's hair. As many sizes as you can afford.
Brights and filberts. See links above.

You will be amazed at how much paint this handy little tool can squeeze out of an almost empty tube. Make sure you get a metal one.

This is applied once the painting is finished. It restores the brilliance of the dried colors and protects the painting. It is odorless and can be removed with Gamsol (above).
General Supplies
Scissors, an apron, handy wipes, mirror, paper towels, t-shirt rags (for cleaning paint off your palette) and towels cut up into small squares (for wiping excess paint off your brush).
