People portraits I find the most challenging of all the paintings I do. Especially since I want them to look like the person I am painting. We all have a head, eyes, ears, nose and mouth but somehow we all manage to look very different from each other. Every person tells a story. The trick is to find that story and represent it on my canvas. This is just a small sampling of the many portraits I've done over the years. Of all the babies, toddlers, teenagers and adults I have painted, my favorite subjects have been older people. There is so much story there to tell. Check out my Animals and Birds portraits.
Most paintings have note cards available. I make them on lovely matte photo paper. Enjoy!

"The Boys"
How awesome do we look? So many years ago, my sister Karen on her beloved Red Cloud in the background and me on Chief, Red Cloud's father, in the foreground. We had just finished a pairs competition and the boys behaved beautifully. There are actual ribbons on the boys heads in the original photo (photographer?) but I left them out and also made our original brown jackets (that I made) purple. Red Cloud (owned by my sister) and Chief (rented by me), were notorious for nervous behaviour! How many times were we trotting nicely along when Red Cloud spotted a leaf hanging from a tree or a puddle that popped up on our path. My sister would go flying because Red Cloud could jump (actually hop) sideways!!!!! Karen would get up off the ground still holding the reins. The two were always on high alert waiting for the next evil leaf, or twig, or dust ball to appear. Fortunately for me, Chief held is ground but eyes would bug out and ears would stand straight up waiting for the attack. I truly loved painting this from an old photograph I had tucked away long ago remembering the very best times
Comment
- Wendy S: Beautiful painting Kathy with wonderful memories. I imagine you can still feel what it was like riding your horse! You make it look so easy (the painting not the horseback).
- Roni D: The painting is beautiful, Kath. It will always make you smile to glance at it!
- Nel L: Great painting Kathy! I love the way it captures a special moment. Hope it brings back happy memories.
- Chris S: I love it! So elegant on your horses! Love the colors of your riding coats!
- Ellen C: Kathy, so beautifully done. And what a lovely story behind it!
- Darlene S: Just beautiful. A few happy moments for you and your sister. The purple jackets are a nice touch. It's obvious your love for animals started at a an early age.

"Noah"
We were having an art class on a Thursday evening. Noah had been one of my students but now he is Mass College of Art!!
His mother, an artist, has taken his place in my class. As we were painting, Noah sent his mom a selfie. I was so intrigued by the photo I asked if she would send the photo to me. He reminded me of James Dean and Elvis Presley - all those long ago dreamy stars! So here is my version of Noah's selfie. This was an absolute joy to paint. At this moment, his mom, my students and I are the only ones who know I've done this. So - Noah, I hope you like this - but you will have to steal it from your mom. :) You were a joy to paint as you were a joy to have as a student. |
"Man with a Camera" (Plaid Dad)
This is my Dad. We were visiting the Shelburne Museum in Vermont. My Dad and Mom watched the paddle boat Ticonderoga dragged from Lake Champlain to its resting place in Shelburne. Here Dad was entranced by the inner workings of the ship. He loves to know how things work. I love this painting of him.

"Woman with Dog"
Mom and Dad are two of my favorite subjects. My Dad took a photo of Mom baby sitting Sir Winston, a sweet, loving Airedale. The original photo had a left window throwing a lot of light on my subjects. I made a few adjustments by creating only one light source. Paint is like that. Magically move, erase, recreate the environment. This is one of my favorites.

"Reading Maps"
Mom and Dad at the Auer Family Boat House in Burlington, Vermont on Lake Champlain. Mom (91) and her baby brother Chuck (87) own the boat house and run a summer business renting boats, selling bait and assorted things to eat (not bait!) Here my parents are reading maps from the bicycle ferry. I forget why. I was more interested in the light and the poses.

"The Silver Bracelet"
My Mom, Christine Auer Hebert, with her beautiful granddaughter Yvette Chalifoux. We were at a wedding and Yvette was starting to fuss so Mom walked her away from the wedding service. I had my trusty camera and I was wearing a silver bracelet which seemed to intrigue and calm her. Probably one of my all time favorite paintings.

"Dad"
Caught this "look" that my Dad always had for me. He never seemed to get where I was coming from but was always fascinated. I think he's always believed I came from some alien planet. :) On this day, Dad rowed me across the mouth of the Winooski River so I could pick up some pieces of driftwood. I get out of the boat and immediately find a really cool top of an old barrel. Luckily I had my camera in hand and caught him. Later I did this painting from the photograph.

"The Belly Dancer"
A friend and I went to a Bellies for Breast Cancer performance. This dancer was so exquisite. This was years ago. I didn't know who she was but I had to paint her. This past spring I got to meet Ela when she bought the painting! It now has a very good home. Thank-you, Ela for the inspiration!
