Animals and birds and butterflies and fish and all kinds of wild and woolly creatures. I cannot imagine a world without these magnificent beings. We can learn so much from them. Whether they are in my home, my garden, my yard or wherever I visit, I'm enchanted by attempting to paint animal paintings. Years ago I began painting pet portraits, cats and dogs in oil on canvas. Eventually I wanted to try my hand at birds, fish, butterflies. To paint an animal or flying or swimming creature is truly an enlightening experience. They have personalities. They communicate. They inspire. Check out my People portraits too.
Some paintings have note cards available. I make them on lovely matte photo paper. All cards are 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" with envelopes, 5 to a package. At the end of this gallery of paintings I have added some note cards that are available from paintings I have sold. Enjoy!

"Amara"
from photos by Perry Power Perry Power is a young man who has influenced my life tremendously. As an abuse survivor who wrote his book "Stop the Silence" I was inspired to join up with him and write my own story of physical, emotional and psychological abuse as a child - "A Memoire: My Lost Childhood." It has been an amazing journey and anyone who has been suffering in silence should seriously think about writing a book about their journey. I did this painting of his lovely Amara as a way of expressing my gratitude for the effect he has had on my life.
Perry - you are so loved! Thank-you! 16 x 20 oil on canvas |
"Taj 2"
Taj is the sister to Kya - and I just couldn't do a large portrait of one and not the other. Painting these girls was like having my kitties back with me.

"The Girls!" How I have loved painting tigers!!!!!! Challenging, stressful and yet so totally rewarding!!!!! SO - I am starting another tiger painting!!! As an artist - I don't always know "why" I have to do something. There is some kind of urging as I gaze at my photos and find one I completely fall in love with. They do not always work, my paintings, but then, I believe that means I am really learning something as I try to figure out how to approach a problem. Trust me, there are many "problems" that come up with executing a painting - brush work, color, more color, composition - and, with tigers - STRIPES. Yikes! But work every minute of suffering I have to go through!!!!

"Eagles #1, #2 (#3)
Quite a few years ago, I visited Roger Williams Zoo with a friend. My camera was not very good and the photo of the eagle I took then was awful. :( So I painted an awful painting from the awful photo. Sigh. But - never give up!!!!
I visited the Roger Williams Zoo a few months ago with a new kit of photo equipment. I managed to get some awesome photos to paint from. This is Eagle #1, Eagle #2 and Eagle #3. Well worth the investment.

I saw this lovely girl at the Roger Williams Zoo. As far as I can tell - her name is Ginny. What a challenge!!! My first elephant. I was so delighted when she started walking to where I was standing!!!!!! I learn so much painting animals. I feel very fortunate that they have shared their personalities with me.

"Josie"
From ZooTampa, Tiffany Burns writes: "That is our amazing female Josie. Sometimes we call her the fun police but she is an amazing mom and grandma. She really helped her daughter Hadiah with raising her baby Topi."
Thank-you, Tiffany for responding to my inquiries about Josie. I was so fascinated watching her and then thinking - what is she thinking about - this strange human standing outside my home pointing a camera at me. I was very blessed to be able to paint her.

"Kya 2"
Still on my Tiger fix. Can't get enough. Didn't have to be as obsessed with the stripes as my last three tigers required. There might be more tigers to come. This is a 2nd portrait of Kya from the Southwick Zoo in Mendon, MA. It was so nice of here to pose for me. :)

"Mata"
Mata is a Malasian tiger. I saw him at ZooTampa, Florida just before Covid started. I am so grateful for the ZooTampa staff getting back to me with his name after I contacted them. Made the painting must easier to paint and more personal for me. I just LOVE animals and their spirits. I feel so truly honored to have been able to paint Mata. And, I loved every minute I got to spend with him doing his portrait.

- Erin D: She’s just gorgeous, Kathleen!! Thanks for sharing!
- Kathy Boh: Gorgeous and I love the background. Can’t wait to see how the “banana” turns out.
- Mel F: Taj is absolutely beautiful. So realistic. You might want to send a copy of your painting where you saw Taj. They might be interested in buying it. If I was them, I sure would. Magnificent!
- Chris B: Kathy...she’s simply gorgeous! She is so soft looking...makes me want to pet her! I have so enjoyed watching you bring theses “kitties” to life!
- Joan G: That is amazing Kathy!!!
- Denise K: Taj is regal!
- Amy W: Beautiful Kathy! Both Taj and Kya are gorgeous. All of your animal paintings are gorgeous - you capture their spirits which then just jump off the page.

"Kya"
I LOVED doing this painting. This is Kya who lives a Southwick Zoo in Mendon, MA. She lives there with her albino sister whom I am now attempting to paint. I think I could just paint animals forever!!!!

- Kathy Boh: Kya is stunning but all your animals paintings are! You want to pet Kya and the koala. I wish I could have seen you paint Kya in person. Just beautiful.
- Susan F: Kya looks terrific, Kathy! It always fun to watch the teacher do her thing. Looking forward to seeing your process with the white tiger.
"Marcus Squirrelius"
I know! Weird name - but he's been Marcus Squirrelius since I started painting him. I LOVED painting this little guy - sitting outside my bedroom window eating one of the millions of black walnuts all over my backyard.

"Vegas"
It's been a wonderful summer of free photography classes at the Worcester Public Library! Richard Hoyer was our fearless leader/teacher. Every Saturday at 2:00 p.m. we ventured out into the wilds of downtown Worcester.
This was one of the spirits I discovered (or maybe he found me?) at the Latin festival on the common during our class time. His name is Vegas and his mom's name is Sandra. What a sweetie!!! "Luna Moth"
It was the last evening with my beloved neighbors before they moved. We were chatting in the driveway. I was going to remove what I thought was a leaf from the door of my old garage. OMG!! Not a leaf but a Luna Moth. So beautiful!!! So honored to be visited. Apparently they are very good omens.

"Blue"
One of my students, Nancy B, graciously let me paint her horse "Blue." I've wanted to paint a horse for years but never seem to have any photos of my own. The photographer, whose painting I worked from, is Melissa Webb. She and her husband, Jason, own Paradigm Farm in Lynnville, TN where Blue is now retired. Thank-you so much, Melissa!! "Winter Cardinal"
You have to be patient! Cardinals know when you are trying to capture them with a camera lens. And they don't sit long enough to get a live portrait in paint. This painting took about two years before I finally caught this beautiful bird in snow.

My Dad has the most incredible zinnia garden up in Burlington, Vermont. On a visit one July, the zinnias were startling in color. Among them were scads of Monarch butterflies. Truly beautiful.
