No Talent Required: from Paint by Numbers to Art Instructor
It was 1986 a week after the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster that I started my first Beginning Art class. A fateful start or was it a fated start? Everyone was so depressed after that tragic day we found talking and sharing a healing addition to learning art. My classes have always been small which offers a wonderful opportunity to get to know each other.
Beginning artists need a lot of help and encouragement. I know, I was once a beginning artist. It was not an easy road and the only way to learn art was to show up and keep working at it. It didn't help that I was often told how not good I was. Fortunately, I liked the challenge! And I liked how I felt when I was drawing and painting. So, with the encouragement and direction of a career counselor I designed and started teaching people like me how to do art. The book just fell into place, having learned enough and lived long enough to finally have a good bit of information to write down and share with people who always dreamed of pursuing art but who were told or believed that they had no talent. My students are living proof of what you can do if you put your mind to it. Every one of them started with my Beginning Art course. You can see their awesome work at Student Work. Guess what!!! You don't need talent! It's nice if you have it, but it is not required! You don't need talent to learn the piano - you just need to dedicate yourself, practice, learn the language and never give up. Learning to draw and paint is no different. And remember, with art, you have to die first before you can become known. Poor Van Gogh sold only two paintings in his lifetime. So it takes the pressure off of having to make everything a masterpiece. I love that thought! Paint and draw because you love it. It's about the journey, not about the product. I hope you enjoy reading about how I got to here. There's even a chapter about the different kinds of materials artists use. I am proud to be able to offer my book on Amazon as both a paperback and Kindle version. You can visit my author page: http://www.amazon.com/author/kathleenartkathebert |
