Who I Am
Artist, art instructor, author.......and when I am not doing yard work, painting, teaching or writing...I belly dance!!!
Artist CVWith the availability of Betty Edwards' book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and the help of a career counselor at the Natick, MA WMCA - Beginning Art was born. This is a 10 week session of all the fundamentals of drawing and art information for people like me - people who feel or have been told they have no talent. The class instruction takes each student through the process of learning how to see like an artist. 1986 was my first class. I still love teaching it and seeing how it helps the people I teach.
In 1993, I took classes in Rockport, MA from Helen Van Wyk at the insistence of my Beginning Art students. They decided I should teach them how to paint. After so many years of painting I was not very good but their enthusiasm spurred me on. That summer changed my life. For the first time, after all the art classes I had taken, with the instruction of Helen Van Wyk I was able to make things look real. After each Friday class I brought what I had learned to my new painting students. Lots of wonderful little miracles. In the process of acquiring many years of teaching, my book "No Talent Required: from Paint by Numbers to Art Instructor" came into being in 2012. A little book about becoming an artist. It was a long journey that I believe has made me a better teacher. So many surprises! An artist and an author. I could never have imagined this when I was younger. Perseverance pays off. Teaching new artists never becomes boring. I love the magic of it all. Art is so healing and so necessary in our present world. Time for class and some more work on my current painting.... |
Lately, I spend a lot of time working on my website. Learning a lot from Dummies Books. This is the third website I have built. This Weebly site was definitely the easiest. My brain does not do well with computers. They are magical to me - sometimes in a good way. As I get older it certainly is a great way to grow more brain cells.
I live, teach adult art classes and paint in Worcester, MA. I offer lots of classes at my home studio. Assabet Valley After Dark in Marlborough offers Beginning Art twice a year in Spring and Fall. This class takes adults who believe they have no talent through ten weeks of instruction - collage, color, emphasis on drawing, perspective, portrait, watercolor, a little bit of everything so the students can make more informed choices on what art they might like to pursue. I am very proud of my graduates many of whom come to paint at my studio. It was at Pratt Institute where I was first introduced to art. It was a requirement of my curriculum. When I graduated in 1973 with a B.F.A. degree in Fashion Design (which I did not pursue) taking more art classes appealed to me. At this point there was not even a faint glimmer of talent in evidence. Drawing and painting made me feel good. My job was singing and playing guitar at local restaurants and nightclubs around Burlington, Vermont and then in Massachusetts at night. During the day - I took art classes. . My Book |
Hope you enjoy my site as much as I enjoyed building it. If you are intrigued about learning to draw and paint but you have been too afraid you needed talent, take a look at my book No Talent Required: from Paint by Numbers to Art Instructor
