My teacher, Helen Van Wyk, used to say..."If you want to learn to paint, paint still life." It really is very different than painting from a flat photo. It's wonderful to be able to study the subject matter of a still life - how does it turn, how does the light hit it, where are the values of dark and light. Unfortunately, flowers don't live very long so I have to be very quick with my "seeing" and my brush. Fortunately, doing a really fast painting once in a while is very freeing and I'm really surprised at the floral painting that emerges.
Some paintings have note cards available. I make them on lovely matte photo paper. Cards come in a pack of 5 with envelopes,
5 1/2" x 4 1/4." At the end of this gallery of paintings I have added some note cards that are available from paintings I have sold. Enjoy!

"Surgery Bouquet"
This was a most beautiful bouquet from one of my students after my back surgery!!! Thank-you, Erin!! While I loved painting this - it just had to be done - now!!! I'm always surprised at how large a 24 x 30 canvas is. More paint!!!!

Just can't get enough of RED!!!! The fabric is a pashmina from India from my students Smitha and Aditi. The flower is made from a Sari from my student Paula. And the red pot found me at Home Good.

"Lord Ganesha"
Remover of Obstacles....
The day I took the photo of him - for this painting the sky turned that dark orange red. I've never seen a sky so intense. So - I added it to this painting. He is a glass statue I fell in love with - and, I adore elephants. I am just learning about the complexity of Hindu gods. Fascinated by the stories and the traditions. 16 x 20

"Still Life with Pearls"
Hmm...this still life went down a road I didn't know I was going to go down. Eventually, I had more fun with the colors which made it easier to finish. Something about pearls and things white I can't seem to figure out. So I'm very attracted to painting projects that drive me crazy!!!!!

"The Boots"
My uncle, Charles K. Auer, Jr., passed away a short time ago. His sister, my Mom, Christine Auer Hebert and I, walked through their beloved Boathouse - remembering. I found his boots snuggled together under a chair just as he left them. I brought the boots outside to photograph thinking I would love making a painting of them. Here is my rendition - a very welcomed challenge.

My Dad's garden is always amazing - whether plants are in pots or in the ground, be they veggies or flowers. Found this beautiful bouquet of white petunias hanging in Dad's garden in Vermont. String beans from my garden and a little sunflower? It got knocked off its stem so I floated it in a ceramic pot of water. Seemed very happy with the arrangement.
